The barcode scanner in everyone’s pocket

It seems that barcodes are getting more attention than ever if a recent news release is anything to go by.

It has been reported that eBay app RedLaser, the iPhone barcode scanning app, has now been downloaded more than two million times in the UK. The app lets iPhone users, and Android users, scan barcodes, QR codes and UPC codes so they can get the best deals while shopping.

The new figures, which have just been released by eBay, show that UK shoppers now use the app 50,000 per month, which coincides with an IAB report which recently stated that almost one half of shoppers have used their mobile device to compare prices with other retailers.

UK Retail Director for eBay, Angus McCarey commented:

“Consumers are taking advantage of new technologies to get savvier in their shopping habits and seek out the best deals on the high-street. Apps like RedLaser are blurring the lines between online and offline shopping.

“We are now seeing one item purchased every second via mobile devices in Britain, that’s double the rate we saw at the beginning of last year. However, mobile is not only generating sales, it is the perfect shopping companion for bargain hunters.”
