The label is one of the focal points of a package

A label is more than likely to be the one visible reminder a customer has of you and your product, and this is one of the main reasons why the quality of the label is as important as the data or message that it is carrying. But appearance alone doesn’t define the quality of a label. A label must serve a practical purpose for a specific application, at DataLabel we produce the many custom labels that are used across industry for items such as: product identification, shipment addressing, bar codes, work-in-process, inventory control, pricing, promotional, and many other purposes.

In order that these labels are completely able to satisfy the application it is designed for, the labels has to adhere to many different surfaces. For example just some of the surfaces that we can cater for include: aluminium, corrugated, fibre packs and drums, glass, plastic, steel, and more. If you have a specific requirement, it is almost certain that we will have a solution and a label to suit it. We can print on most substrates including vinyl, paper, polyester and a range of tamper evident material. Barcodes do not present a problem and we utilise all major barcode systems, including the most popular EAN (retail) codes, code 39 and 128 symbologies. Adhesives fall into a number of categories and we can accommodate your needs through a wide range, including peelable, permanent and extra permanent adhesive.

A new label to save consumers money

A novel and new way to use a label is to be introduced by The Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and John Lewis, who will introduce a product-labeling trial next year that shows the lifetime running costs of household appliances, so simple you wonder why this label has not been in use before now. Earlier trials in Norway have shown that when consumers see the running costs as well as the initial cost of a product they are more likely to buy energy efficient models and now John Lewis is to begin using a label on goods such as washing machines, washer dryers and tumble dryers.

With the cost of energy increasing each year this sort of label is sure to help keep usage down to a necessary minimum without waste and although we do have labels which rate appliances from A to F showing how energy efficient a product is, these are reported in kWh per year, rather than in estimated monetary terms for the life of the product. So this is another way in which labeling products can give necessary information and save the consumer money over the lifetime of the product.

Barcode medication systems transform safety

Trials carried out in Bristol using barcode label technology has been used in a number of care homes with great success and has resulted in medication safety systems have being transformed. This pioneering technology is due to an innovative collaboration between NHS Bristol, Pharmacy Plus and the care home sector.

From information received it seems that around 52% of care home residents have a serious medication error, such as being given another resident’s medication, in any three month period and this new technology stops care workers from making these mistakes, ensuring that the right medication is scanned and then can only be given to the right person at the right time. The system is known as Proactive Care System (PCS) is the first barcode validation system of its kind created.  The system is expected to not only protect patients but also save the NHS money on drug over-use and waste, this is a recognised problem in care homes with up to £50 million of drugs returned to pharmacies each year by care homes for disposal

Some roles of Barcode Labels

If you imagine that barcodes are used only on products that are sold in shops and supermarkets, you would be rather off the mark. These labels are used for many purposes as they are small but can carry lots of information not just a price of the item, can be easily scanned in restricted spaces in necessary.

Pricing of products is the most obvious and they also know the price of the product and avoid intentional or un-intentional mistake at the cash point.

ID cards are another popular use of the bar code label; most ID cards today will have barcodes on them, which are scanned using a swipe system. These are used to record the clocking on and clocking off times of employees and are also used in maintaining security at offices, by knowing the details of the persons entering in to the organisation.

Government departments and large organisation will often attach a self adhesive label which has a barcode printed onto it on items that are to be returned to the department. On scanning them, information such as, date, time and place of receiving, the person who has received it, person who prepared the documents is easily retrieved.

Events tickets for shows or pop concerts increasingly have a code on them which is scanned before entering the vent to see if it is genuine or a fake; they also register how many people are in the building.

Barcode labels are being widely used in hospitals to keep all the information related to patients documented. Attached to the wrist of the patient it can hold information about the patient such as date of birth blood type special diet and so on.

Mill order companies and increasingly parcel delivery companies and couriers use a self adhesive label to an item to relay information about delivery times and proof of delivery. Barcodes are helpful in tracking the information regarding the mails, where it is being circulated, etc.

Label Design

Getting an outstanding design in a label is important; it is your company’s image and this is why DataLabel will always send a true colour proof using an inkjet printer for you to approve and comment upon. The first step for production of your label is the artwork and no matter if the design is simple or complicated this can be accurately reproduced. We are able to support a number of formats and we can reproduce engineering drawings, or work from simple sketches sent to you to check, approve or request changes, the completed artwork is always sent to you for approval. You may wish to use your own artwork and this can be accommodated, the best way for this to be submitted is through email, but we can work from a disc.

The shape of the label may depend upon your company image, but we have in use around 5000 different shapes and for a small fee we can always accommodate a special shape by ordering a tool to suit. To keep the cost to the customer as low as possible, we have invested in digital printing technology and although we use PC, MAC formats can be accommodated. All our label manufacturing is in house and specific designs, colours, and varying styles are faithfully reproduced on our modern digital press, all of which ensures that your company gets the personalised labels at the most competitive price and on time.

Labelling and Identification

A business cannot be efficient and is on the road to failure if it has no idea what stock it has, what is in the inventory, the value of its assets. Today, this is where modern labelling in the form of an effective barcode-based data collection, asset management, workflow management, work-in-process, and supply chain or inventory management system is how a modern business would operate.
However, it is vital that each item is properly labelled; otherwise the effectiveness of the system is likely to be unreliable. Getting advice on how products and assets are best labelled is normally down to the expertise of specialist companies, they will be able to help with labelling and identification solutions. This would include barcode label design and printing, asset labelling and tagging, mobile label printing, to name a few.

It is possible to choose a label from a wide variety of sizes and these can be custom designed that are formulated to your application’s specific requirements, including harsh environments. Whatever your needs, keeping track of items is made easier by labelling and the range includes security labels, asset labels, product labels, barcode labels and more.

Barcodes for patient identification

The use of barcode technology for patient identification is a growing trend at many hospitals and the data stored on the barcode label can hold a lot of useful information outside of the patient’s name, address, date of birth for example. Important information such as allergies, blood groups and admission data can be easily and quickly stored using General Practioners records in advance of a patient’s admission to hospital for routine examination or surgery.

With barcoding, as any technology implementation, the key to success lies in helping nurses and other medical staff confirm patient identification with the greatest possible ease and reliability. The use of bar codes on wristbands is widespread in the United States and is gaining popularity worldwide. The reasons for this are that effective error-free patient identification is one of the most important steps for ensuring the safety of the patient, this helps to prevent dangerous medical errors by making accurate and reliable patient information immediately available to the medical staff during the hospital stay of the patient; barcodes assure positive patient identification through scanning.

About barcodes and their origins

Although the barcode label is now a common sight, its invention revolutionised the way that products could be identified by the simple use of an electronic reader or scanner, Its beginnings date back to the late 1940’s when an American food retailer was hoping to find a way that food products could be automatically identified at the checkout to avoid having to price each individual item on the shelves and then manually punch the price into the cash register.

A student Bernard Silver overheard the conversation and with the help of friend and fellow graduate Bernard Woodland, they set about trying to come up with the answer. Following ideas based on the Morse code the pair eventually filed for a patent in 1948 which was subsequently granted in 1952.

Woodland joined IBM and although they were interested in the idea, the patent was eventually sold to RCA. The first recorded use of bar-coding was at a food store in Ohio using a scanner by the NCR corporation and the very first known item to be scanned in a retail setting was a ten pack of Wrigley’s Fruit Gum, and a revolution in retailing began to take shape.

Although many think that barcode is used only for products which are sold in a retail setting, they are now used for a multitude of purposes having the ability to carry and retain the information quickly and identified by a scanning process.
