The value of asset labels

Our asset labels cannot be easily copied and this makes them particularly useful when they are used in places where tracking of a company’s assets is required. For example, the many parts used in a computer, memory cards, office equipment, in fact anything that you may want to keep track of.

Which kind of asset label will be best for your application will depend upon the items to be tracked, for example our standard paper barcode labels may not work for every type of product or equipment; you might need something a little more robust. Metal could be the ones which are best, they are difficult or nearly impossible to tamper with or removed easily. The information engraved upon them and is not affected by wear and tear. Also the information on metal tags is always readable whatever the temperatures or climatic conditions are thrown at it.

However for items such as food items or other perishables, a reflective label is best as they will respond easily to optical reading devices. Foil labels on the other hand are used extensively in the business world and these labels can be found and used in the tracking and movement of raw materials.

We will be happy to discuss the best options for your particular company products or equipment and we will give a quotation for the manufacturing and supply of these asset labels.

Electronic Article Surveillance

Theft in the retail industry cost billions of pounds and ultimately it matters to us all. The retailer is not just going to shrug his shoulders as though nothing has happened and stand the loss out of the profits, no it means that all of us who shop must bear the cost of this theft by increased charges.

Security tags are now widely accepted in industry generally, but increasingly in the retail sector. These tags which incorporate sensors are weapons which many retailers incorporate on their goods that trigger an alert when someone tries to remove the item from a store without paying.

These security tags are known as Electronic Article Surveillance of EAS tags which help the industry in combating and deterring theft. The tags themselves can come in a variety of forms, for example, hard tags, magnetic or soft tags, any of these can be fixed to the goods that are displayed.

The sensor element in the tag is deactivated when the shopper pays for the goods at the cash point, if it is not deactivated alarms are sounded should the thief try to exit the shop. Shoplifting or stealing from shops is still a major cost to the retailer and subsequently ourselves and these security tags help to deter this theft.

Clear Labels

Attracting the customer to your product can be helped by having a “no label” look to the product, particularly if it is a shower gel or shampoo, drink, even household cleaning items can be more attractive with a label showing the contents through the container.

In the last 15 or 20 years this kind of label has increased in popularity and you can achieve some eye catching shapes, normally this would be achieved using polypropylene instead of the more commonly used polythene. By applying the correct processes including the important adhesive to ensure the no label appearance, Data Label can ensure that you achive the clarity that gives the effect of a direct printed bottle or container without in any way compromising the high quality of the print.

By using our digital label printing process, we can achieve excellent results on clear label, or if you prefer, translucent labels that have a delicate shading to emphasise the product or your company logo. The label itself can be supplied in a range of materials to suit you and the appearance of the “no label” look of your product would suit polypropylene, polyester or polyethylene. We will be happy to discuss what can be achieved in a transparent or clear label.

Producing a label that will last

There are of course occasions when we want a label to destruct, perhaps when used as tamper evident labels that show for example that show when food or product have been “tampered” with. However, we usually want labels that will withstand all the rigours and hardships of everyday use or storage in a freezer.

Here at DataLabel, we can produce a wide variety of labels, on a wide variety of materials and as long as we have the information about the way the product may be used or stored, we will create a label that will take this in its stride. Maybe your label will have to withstand exposure to water, or in some instances chemicals, heat or long storage periods in a warehouse environment.

In any of these instances you need you product label to still carry all the information, logo or branding. A high proportion of our labels require the use of either Polyester or Polypropylene both of these materials will withstand the harsh conditions or even being handled frequently.

Naturally the label has to remain in place stay pristine and proudly display all the information that you want. If you require a label to withstand any condition, give us a call on 01293 551520, or drop us an email at sales@datalabel.co.uk and we will promptly deal with your enquiry.

Types & Some Characteristics Of A Barcode Label

We are more than familiar with the barcode today, it is just everywhere that you can imagine. Barcodes are of course available in a wide variety of materials, they cal also have different adhesive backing according to where they may be used.

So which are the materials that are mostly used in barcode? Essentially they can be categorised into three types, aluminium, polyester, and ceramic, the aluminium barcode label is very durable and the information on the surface that lasts for many years, even in harsh conditions, withstanding very hot and very cold temperatures and also chemical attack.

Polyester labels are resilient as well; they have the information embedded on the underside beneath the plastic and normally have an adhesive that is permanent in its characteristics.

For a barcode label that will withstand just about everything that is thrown at it, unaffected by acidic chemicals or high temperatures, we would recommend that you use ceramic. These barcode labels are made from stainless steel and coated with a ceramic material such as porcelain.

These are just three materials which can be used for a barcode label; there are many others such as paper barcodes, resin barcodes, retro-reflective barcodes and floor barcodes. We will be happy to discuss with you the best label for a barcode, call us and we will be happy to advise which material will be best.

Some materials we use for asset labels

A company’s assets often have to stand up to very harsh treatment, adverse conditions, extremes of heat and cold and they still have to do the job for which they were intended, ensuring the asset is still traceable.

Today business no longer has to keep log files and the like for keeping track of their asset base, adding a simple barcode to the item ensures that whenever you need to the information is available by scanning.

We have a variety of labels that we can offer, much will depend on what the actual asset is and the conditions in which it will be used. If we take heavy industrial equipment as an example, we might suggest that you use a metal label which will withstand all manner of harsh conditions, whether this is heat, exposure to corrosive chemicals are two examples. We can assure you that the information cannot be deleted as we ensure that it is all safely sealed within aluminium. You can expect that labels of this type will last for many years against the harshest of environments and physical damage.

The use of steel would be normally chosen where the asset is used outdoors and obviously exposed to the elements. With our steel labels, we can confidently assure you that these will withstand harsh weather and these labels are prevalent in the food industry as corrosion could be seen as a contaminant. These steel labels have been proved to withstand temperatures as high as 1,000 degrees.

Some different uses for security labels

We are all security conscious when it comes to our own personal property and the same can be said for important business property, it is after all a company asset and the location of the asset has to be known. It has been know for assets to “disappear” or it may be that they gave been misplaced or even stole. For this reason companies now using security labels to keep a check on their assets.

Security labels are commonly seen on goods that are being transported when it is essential that those items are safe and secure from being interfered with and in these instances, security tags can be used. These tags have security codes which should never be given out to a third party; an example of where a security tag may be often seen is lockers that are used in banks.

Although the most common security tag is manufactured from plastic, but increasingly the use of metal and fibre are being used. Another place where we all will have come across a security tag is in a clothing store where they are attached to the garment to prevent shoplifting, book retailers also have security tags on their books which are disabled when the item is purchased. If you would like to find out more about security tags and asset tags, contact us and we will be only too pleased to discuss the number of options that are available.

What Are Varnished labels

To varnish or not varnish a label is a question that we are often asked, this will depend on where the product that the label is to used upon will to a large degree determine whether it is desirable to varnish your label.

We are highly experienced in supplying labels that are varnished and in many cases over laminated, much will depend upon the amount of protection that the label requires. Varnishing a printed label can add to the aesthetic value of a product or retail label, this process will also assist in protecting the label from the effects of condensation, dampness, as well as exposure to solvents and other sources of contamination.

If your business is in manufacturing, distribution or retailing, we provide a wide variety of labels that come in hundreds of sizes and shapes, we have over 5,000 stock sizes of cutter which we are sure can meet your requirement. With regard to the varnishing process, we can offer labels that have a high gloss or a matt finish and we are also able in many cases, to spot varnish an area on the label in order to highlight this, possible your company name, a logo or special feature of the product.

So if you are unsure about the benefits that a varnished label can bring, or you are looking at a new venture and are unsure whether it will benefit from a varnished label, please contact us and we will be only too pleased to discuss this with you.

Barcode Or QR Code – Whats The Difference

We all know and love barcodes they have been with us seemingly forever, well in fact they really first saw the light of day in the late 1960 on the American Railroad system, the barcode as we know it came about in 1974 on a packet of Wrigley’s Chewing gum! What then about the new kid on the block the QR code, which came about in 1994 and is similar in many ways to the barcode, but also very different.

Barcodes are in everyday use today, we see them on just about every label in a supermarket and elsewhere. The barcode works in a different way to the QR code, the barcode is a one dimension code that holds a series of numbers and of course is fantastic at the point of sale, or in the warehouse or stocktaking. This little series of stripes has revolutionised the checkout process and helps in stock management and in asset management.

On the other hand the QR code can hold a tremendous amount of information in the small square which it occupies. They are two dimensional and hold more information; in fact they can hold about one hundred times as much as the humble barcode, they also occupy a much smaller space on the label. Another advantage can be that at almost any angle they are readable.

QR codes really took off with the growth of the smartphone and it is perhaps this that has driven the use of QR codes more than the benefits they impart. So is it a barcode, or do you want to think about using QR codes on your product? Call us and we will be happy to discuss your options.
