Our asset labels cannot be easily copied and this makes them particularly useful when they are used in places where tracking of a company’s assets is required. For example, the many parts used in a computer, memory cards, office equipment, in fact anything that you may want to keep track of.

Which kind of asset label will be best for your application will depend upon the items to be tracked, for example our standard paper barcode labels may not work for every type of product or equipment; you might need something a little more robust. Metal could be the ones which are best, they are difficult or nearly impossible to tamper with or removed easily. The information engraved upon them and is not affected by wear and tear. Also the information on metal tags is always readable whatever the temperatures or climatic conditions are thrown at it.

However for items such as food items or other perishables, a reflective label is best as they will respond easily to optical reading devices. Foil labels on the other hand are used extensively in the business world and these labels can be found and used in the tracking and movement of raw materials.

Theft in the retail industry cost billions of pounds and ultimately it matters to us all. The retailer is not just going to shrug his shoulders as though nothing has happened and stand the loss out of the profits, no it means that all of us who shop must bear the cost of this theft by increased charges.

Security tags are now widely accepted in industry generally, but increasingly in the retail sector. These tags which incorporate sensors are weapons which many retailers incorporate on their goods that trigger an alert when someone tries to remove the item from a store without paying.

These security tags are known as Electronic Article Surveillance of EAS tags which help the industry in combating and deterring theft. The tags themselves can come in a variety of forms, for example, hard tags, magnetic or soft tags, any of these can be fixed to the goods that are displayed.

The sensor element in the tag is deactivated when the shopper pays for the goods at the cash point, if it is not deactivated alarms are sounded should the thief try to exit the shop. There are of course occasions when we want a label to destruct, perhaps when used as tamper evident labels that show for example that show when food or product have been “tampered” with. However, we usually want labels that will withstand all the rigours and hardships of everyday use or storage in a freezer.

We are more than familiar with the barcode today, it is just everywhere that you can imagine. Barcodes are of course available in a wide variety of materials, they cal also have different adhesive backing according to where they may be used.

So which are the materials that are mostly used in barcode? Essentially they can be categorised into three types, aluminium, polyester, and ceramic, the aluminium barcode label is very durable and the information on the surface that lasts for many years, even in harsh conditions, withstanding very hot and very cold temperatures and also chemical attack.

Polyester labels are resilient as well; they have the information embedded on the underside beneath the plastic and normally have an adhesive that is permanent in its characteristics.

For a barcode label that will withstand just about everything that is thrown at it, unaffected by acidic chemicals or high temperatures, we would recommend that you use ceramic. These barcode labels are made from stainless steel and coated with a ceramic material such as porcelain.

These are just three materials which can be used for a barcode label; there are many others such as paper barcodes, resin barcodes, retro-reflective barcodes and floor barcodes. A company’s assets often have to stand up to very harsh treatment, adverse conditions, extremes of heat and cold and they still have to do the job for which they were intended, ensuring the asset is still traceable.

Today business no longer has to keep log files and the like for keeping track of their asset base, adding a simple barcode to the item ensures that whenever you need to the information is available by scanning.

We have a variety of labels that we can offer, much will depend on what the actual asset is and the conditions in which it will be used. To varnish or not varnish a label is a question that we are often asked, this will depend on where the product that the label is to used upon will to a large degree determine whether it is desirable to varnish your label.

We all know and love barcodes they have been with us seemingly forever, well in fact they really first saw the light of day in the late 1960 on the American Railroad system, the barcode as we know it came about in 1974 on a packet of Wrigley’s Chewing gum! What then about the new kid on the block the QR code, which came about in 1994 and is similar in many ways to the barcode, but also very different.

Barcodes are in everyday use today, we see them on just about every label in a supermarket and elsewhere. The barcode works in a different way to the QR code, the barcode is a one dimension code that holds a series of numbers and of course is fantastic at the point of sale, or in the warehouse or stocktaking. This little series of stripes has revolutionised the checkout process and helps in stock management and in asset management.

On the other hand the QR code can hold a tremendous amount of information in the small square which it occupies. They are two dimensional and hold more information; in fact they can hold about one hundred times as much as the humble barcode, they also occupy a much smaller space on the label. Another advantage can be that at almost any angle they are readable.
